Watering is one of the most important lawn care items. Proper and timely irrigation will provide a beautiful view, stimulate plant growth and create a favorable climate. With a lack of moisture, the growth process slows down, the lawn grass turns yellow and begins to fade. Watering the lawn is necessary in the spring, summer and autumn.
How to find out that the lawn needs watering?
With a lack of moisture, the grass itself will demonstrate this to you.
It is better to get ahead of drying by the first signs:
- Grass began to curl;
- The lawn began to be trampled, the grass rises for a long time after being pressed;
- During drought, the grass becomes brown;
- Grass fades or turns yellow;
- Bald spots appear.
The most noticeable wilting on the old grass. The common bluegrass and the white field are the first to suffer from drought. The average soil moisture requirement for bluegrass meadow is a chaff.
The least whimsical fescue. With a lack of water, drought-resistant grasses remain alive. If their leaves and root system dry, the plants go into rest mode. When moistened, the soil begins to grow again. Despite the fact that the herbs survived, their appearance during drought leaves much to be desired. A yellowed lawn is unlikely to please the eye.
When is it better to water the lawn?
The most common question: when to water – in the morning or in the evening? In each case, there are peculiarities and subtleties. Watering is best done in the early morning. In cool, calm weather, the water evaporates less and the grass has time to dry before the onset of heat. Daytime watering is also acceptable, however, it is worth considering that with the scorching sun, wet grass can get burned: drops of water create a lens effect. Humidification of the grass stand in the heat is called harmful irrigation; spots appear on the blades of grass. Therefore, for daytime watering, cloudy days or the autumn period, when the sun is less hot, are better suited.
Evening watering in the summer is recommended between 16.00 and 18.00. This is due to the fact that the grass must dry. If the grass cover stays wet all night, this can adversely affect its condition and lead to fungal diseases.
How often do you need to water the lawn?
For an accurate answer to the question how many times you need to water the lawn, the following factors must be taken into account: soil type, weather and root depth. Weather is a critical factor.
In the driest hot summer weather, watering is recommended every day. On average in Russia, in hot weather and on sandy soils, the lawn needs to be watered 2-3 times a week. In autumn and in cool weather, the rate of moistening of the stand decreases to 1 time in 10 days. The main point that must be considered when watering is that the land between waterings must have time to dry out. This will stimulate the growth of the root system: the roots begin to grow inland, extracting residual moisture. In October, a week before frosts, watering should be stopped completely.
One of the most difficult questions is how much water is required to irrigate the lawn. For the middle lane there is a watering rate, which is from 20 to 40 liters per 1 sq.m of lawn. Watering should be moderate. Formation of puddles and accumulation of water is unacceptable. The frequency of irrigation is determined by the composition of the soil and weather conditions. For light sandy loamy soils, the frequency of irrigation is once every 3-4 days. For clay once every 7-10 days. Additional hydration is carried out after cutting, during the period of active growth and when fertilizing with fertilizers. Excessive watering of the lawn leads to overgrowing with moss and the development of fungal diseases.
If the lawn was made recently, the grass on it has not yet sprouted, then the soil must always be kept moist. Watering in this case is required daily. Soil without vegetation and turf does not retain moisture, the dark surface of the earth heats up, water quickly evaporates. On average, daily watering should be about 7-10 days. Further, the frequency of soil moisture is determined by the composition of the soil and the average daily temperature.
Types of irrigation
For young grass, or immediately after planting, you need a little water: the root system has not yet formed a layer of sod that absorbs and retains moisture. Therefore, you can not water a lot, but often. Deep abundant watering should be done in drought in the summer. Wrong or harmful watering – usually it is a saturation of the soil with moisture or moistening in a hot day. In both cases, the grass turns yellow and fades. Watering in a drought is best done in the early morning.
Means for watering the lawn
Means and methods of watering the green lawn, everyone chooses for himself. Depending on the area of the lawn, the complexity of the terrain and its forms, the following watering options can be considered:
Garden watering can is the easiest way to water the lawn with your own hands. Ideal for watering a small lawn near the house. You can not do without a watering can and to moisten problem areas, in places where there is no hose stream or so as not to wet the garden paths once again.
Garden hoses are a simple and versatile way to water. Together with spray nozzles, it perfectly irrigates the soil, does not wash away the soil and does not damage the root system. You can water the plants without using special nozzles, slightly blocking the stream with your finger. Due to the fact that watering is done with your own hands, the earth will be thoroughly moistened over the entire area. The downside is that you have to spend your time moving the hose with the nozzle on the lawn.
Perforated hoses differ from ordinary hoses only in that there are a lot of holes over their entire surface. The hose is deployed on the territory of the lawn, and rather large areas are irrigated through the holes.
Sprinkler is a convenient device that turns a powerful jet from a hose into rain. The use of such a nozzle does not allow water to destroy the soil surface during irrigation. The disadvantage of this device is the large proportion of water vapor during irrigation. It blows small particles of water by the wind.
A circular sprinkler during operation is similar to a fountain. Usually installed in a few pieces, great for watering lawns of a small area.
Rotating sprinkler – this device is a sprinkler with the ability to regulate the jet. This irrigation system allows you to adjust the distance of irrigation so as not to flood garden paths or swings.
The swinging or oscillating sprinkler is designed specifically for irrigation of rectangular and square lawns. The device allows you to adjust the range and degree of watering.
Automatic irrigation systems are used on large lawns when watering with your own hands takes a very long time. The most important aspect is that the irrigation systems are installed in front of the lawn. There are two types of sprinklers used in these systems: stationary (or visible) and recessed. Heated sprinklers appear on the surface of the lawn only during irrigation.
The automatic irrigation system consists of an underground pipe and hose system, sprinklers, a large capacity water container, pumps, tensiometers, rain sensors and a computer. Tensiometers transmit soil moisture information to a computer. Rain sensors report no watering at the programmed time, if there is rain. Such systems are calculated and installed by specialists.
